What Does It Mean When an Athlete Has Gird in Their Shoulder?

2022-03-02T06:16:24-08:00
Question: What does it mean when an athlete has GIRD in their shoulder and what can they do about it?
Answer: GIRD stands for Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit. This complicated sounding problem is common in baseball pitchers and most overhead athletes. The athlete will present with extensive external rotation to the shoulder and decreased internal rotation. This is a concern because it can predispose them to shoulder injuries such as postural impingement and labral tears. We look to correct the problem with a stretching program that should be implemented along with a focused strengthening program.

Should I Be Concerned About a Stiff Hip?

2022-03-02T06:17:00-08:00

Dr. John Knight of Golden State Orthopedics & Spine talks about having a stiff hip.

Question: I have a stiff hip. Should I be concerned about it?

Answer: This may simply be a matter of the soft tissues about your hips — your muscles, ligaments and tendons — not being adequately flexible to allow full motion. Of more concern, you may have changes to the shape of the bones, the ball and socket joint, which now prevent some extremes of motion and may injuring such structures as the labrum of your hip. The labrum acts as a seal around the ball and socket [Learn More]

Can I Do Anything to Prevent an ACL Injury?

2022-03-02T06:17:34-08:00

Dr. John Knight of Golden State Orthopedics & Spine explains ACL injuries.

Question: Can I do anything to prevent an ACL injury?

Answer: Athletes can reduce their risk of ACL injuries by performing training drills that require balance, power and agility. Adding plyometric exercises, such as jumping or balance drills, helps improve neuromuscular conditioning and muscular reactions and ultimately relates to a decrease in ACL injury. Many team physicians now routinely recommend and ACL conditioning program, especially for their female players.

Nonsurgical Treatment Relieves Pain from Plantar Fasciitis

2022-03-21T07:34:14-07:00

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — There are two million cases of heel pain reported in the U.S. every year. Most of these cases respond well to traditional therapies, but for a relatively small percentage (10-20%) that do not, surgery seems inevitable.

Currently, there is a new and innovative treatment that promises to be the outpatient alternative to surgery. This technique is called Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT). Its corresponding treatment device, the OssaTron®, received approval by the FDA in July 2000. With ESWT, many patients can be back on their feet within days or weeks instead of months.

Careful Diagnosis Helps Fracture Patients Put Best Foot Forward

2022-03-02T06:25:20-08:00

Early identification of foot injuries can help prevent need for surgical intervention

Located in areas of the foot that can be hard to visualize with X-rays and other imaging techniques, injuries to the ankle area of the foot are the most frequently misdiagnosed of all foot fractures. Delayed diagnosis can have serious consequences, sometimes leading to permanent disability.

A new review article published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS) shows that a detailed description of the injury, recognition of subtle diagnostic imaging clues, and targeted physical exam can help avoid long-term injuries and disabilities that may [Learn More]

The Troublesome Hamstring

2022-03-02T06:26:30-08:00

We’ve all seen our favorite player pull up as she breaks away a layup or runs down a drop shot. The player grabs the back of the thigh and limps off to the side to receive treatment for the dreaded hamstring strain. You know it will hobble her for the rest of the match and it’ll be a constant annoyance for the rest of the tournament.

But how bad could it be? There’s rarely talk of surgery on these tears, right?

So what are the hamstring muscles and how do you prevent such an annoying injury? What are the potential treatments?
