What Is an Apophyseal Injury?

Dr. George Tischenko of Golden State Orthopedics & Spine describes an apophyseal injury and explains the time it takes to heal.

Question:
What is an apophyseal injury and how long will I be out for?
Answer:
Apophyseal injuries are stresses to the growth plate in adolescent athletes. They can range from just a stress reaction with inflammation in the area and soreness, to a complete fracture. Fractures can occur during explosive movements where the muscle is contracted forcibly causing it to pull the bone away from its origin. These injuries usually occur to the heel, the knee or the anterior front of the pelvis. Non-fractures to these areas can usually be treated with rest, ice, compression, elevation and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, and the gradual progression back with an emphasis on improving strength and flexibility. But an apophyseal fracture can take 6-8 weeks to heal properly and it is important to monitor the progression of the healing so the athlete can return at an appropriate time without reaggravating the injury.Learn More
